We have developed very simple methods to test return energy of paddles that in theory could be applied in the field by all players using common technology. The details of this test we will be keeping confidential for now.
In the process of developing this method we realized how important it is that equipment and methods be simple. These methods were easier and more accurate when performed at conditions that were representative of normal gameplay.
What is needed is a integrated method that combines deflection and return energy efficiency. However it is clear that whatever form this method takes it should be performed at conditions representative of normal play.
Regulating extrema is fine but we should be perfectly clear that coefficient of restitution will not cap ball velocity nor will it remove paddles that are predicated on elastic mechanisms from play.
